Romantic Waves

Looking for a soft and sweet look? Try romantic waves. This gentle style is natural looking and relaxed; ideal for a day at work, a romantic walk through the forest and everything in between.

Unlike beach waves or tousled locks, which are more messy-chic, soft waves are characterized by volume and flow. So if you’re feeling particularly romantic right now, learn how to get soft waves that reflect your whimsical vibe with our step-by-step tutorial.

Romantic soft waves tutorial

Soft waves may look effortless, but some effort is involved in creating them. Don’t worry, it won’t take long.

Start by washing your hair

Picking the right shampoo and conditioner for your hair type is important, but for romantic soft waves, we want to encourage any natural texture to shine through.

Whether your hair is pin-straight or has a wave or curl to it, start by washing your hair with TRESemmé Flawless Curls Shampoo and Conditioner. This combo is created specifically for curly hair, so if your hair is super straight, don’t expect to leap out of the shower with cherubic ringlets. It will detangle your hair and tame frizz, though. Plus, it contains coconut oil, so your hair will smell divine and feel beautifully moisturized and strengthened.

Prep your hair for drying

Once you’ve washed your hair, pat out any excess water with a towel and use a wide-toothed comb to get rid of any tangles.

Next, take a golf ball-sized pump of TRESemmé Flawless Curls Moisturizing Hair Mousse (which is also infused with coconut oil), rub it between your palms, and scrunch your hair upwards to encourage waves to come through.

If your hair is still straight, don’t worry – we’ll get to that when we start styling.

Before you grab your blow-dryer, be sure to remember your TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Anti-Frizz Heat Defense Spray. Spritz it over your hair, from mid-lengths to ends and leave to soak in for a couple of minutes while you attach the diffuser to your blow-dryer.

Blow-dry using diffuser attachment

If you’ve never used a diffuser before, don’t fear – it’s super easy.

  • Hold your blow-dryer vertically with the diffuser end facing upwards.
  • Tilt your head to one side and push the diffuser into your hair to about halfway up.
  • Use a medium heat setting and medium power to dry the hair as it sits in the diffuser.
  • Keep this up throughout your hair until it’s dry from mid-lengths to ends.
  • To dry your roots, massage the forks of the diffuser over your scalp without interfering with the lengths.

Avoid touching your new waves while your hair’s still warm from blow-drying, as this can cause the waves to vanish into a flurry of frizz.

Assess the status

Once your hair is fully dry, it’s time to see whether you’ve managed to get soft waves so far. If there are sections that are still looking straight or sticking out, reach for the curling iron.

A one-inch curling wand is ideal for getting soft waves. Wrap small sections of hair around the curling wand, away from your face. Hold the wand in place for a few seconds, then release. Again, wait until each wave has cooled before touching it.

Once your new soft waves have cooled down, brush through for a looser, romantic style. And to finish it all off? You guessed it! Spray with TRESemmé Flawless Curls Flexible Hold Curly Hair Spray to fix your style in place, and you’re good to go.
