Influenced by the ethos of the timeless and effortless-looking French chignon, but with a dose of cool-girl, the messy top knot is the cutest and easiest way to spruce up your hairstyle at home. Whether you’re hopping on a virtual date or simply want to feel more put together around the house, this messy top knot will give you a cool and effortless-looking style.

Favored by those who like their locks to be styled in a matter of minutes (hey, no judgement here!), this easy up do is a great solution for day-old hair. And from supermodels to bloggers, it seems everyone is a fan.

Perhaps one of our favorite reasons to champion the top knot is because these messy buns are so versatile: dressed down with your love-worn denim or done up with added polish for evening, this look can take you from day to night with ease. As Happily Grey blogger Mary Seng says, "They’re fresh and young. Wear in the day, casually, with ripped denim, and you can switch into your little black dress for the night." A girl after our own heart, indeed.

So, how do you create this effortlessly chic look? We asked Tyler Laswell, TRESemmé New York Fashion Week stylist, to take us through the process step-by-step. Just follow the five easy tips below to perfect your top knot skills.

Step 1: Start by prepping your hair. You want to be working with hair that has a bit of texture, so if yours is freshly washed, you’ll need to add product for added grip. We recommend TRESemmé TRES Two Extra-Firm Control Mousse.

Step 2: Create a ponytail and position it high on your head. Tip: follow the line of your cheekbones for the best placement. Once you secure your ponytail, add the mousse to your lengths, avoiding the hair on your scalp. Rough dry the mousse into your pony with a blow dryer, using your fingers to tease it to create volume and texture. You can also use a teasing comb to gently backcomb if needed.

Step 3: Take the ponytail and wrap it loosely around the base, pinning and teasing as you go.

Step 4: Tuck the end under the bun and tease out some extra curls and waves to frame your face for a soft finish.

Step 5: For added control, using TRES TWO Ulltra Fine Mist Non-Aerosol Hair Spray to set the look in place while maintaining your perfectly undone 'do.

Et voila! An effortlessly chic top knot to master at home.
