“This look is strong, but still elegant,” says TRESemmé stylist Ursula Stephen. “I love the dominance and strength that the braid gives, and the hair wrapped around the braid adds a chic finish.”
Our wonderful Ursula has created this step-by-step tutorial for a wrapped braided ponytail hairstyle that you can easily recreate at home.
Step 1: Wash your hair
Starting with freshly-washed hair is the best way to ensure that your braided ponytail looks its best and lasts longer. Ursula recommends a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner, such as TRESemmé Rich Moisture Shampoo and Conditioner, which are infused with hyaluronic acid and vitamin E, to give your hair the nourishment it needs.
For the wrapped braided ponytail, you’ll be working with dry hair, so blow-dry your hair straight ready for the next step. Always remember to use heat defense spray before exposing your hair to heat. We recommend TRESemmé Thermal Creations Blow Dry Accelerator Heat Spray, which will speed up the drying process while protecting and smoothing your hair.
Step 2: Create a high ponytail
Brush your hair back with no part and gather at the top for a high pony, securing with a hair tie. Use a little TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Hair Shine Anti-Frizz Serum through your ponytail to help tame any flyaways, nourish your strands, and keep your hair smooth and shiny.
Step 3: Braid and extend
Separate your ponytail into three sections and braid from top to bottom. If you aren’t using hair extensions, separate into four sections and leave a section of hair out of the braid for wrapping. If you’re using hair extensions, now’s the time to clip them in, underneath the braid, and secure them with pins to hold firmly in place.
Step 4: It’s a wrap!
Take the hair extension, or the fourth section of hair, and tightly wrap it around the braid from top to bottom. When you get to the ends, discreetly pin the wrapped hair in place before securing with a hair tie. Finally, spray TRESemmé TRES TWO Extra Hold Hair Spray all over to fix your wrapped braided ponytail in place.
What if my hair isn’t long enough for a wrapped braid?
If your hair isn’t super-long, and you don’t have clip-in extensions to hand, stylist Ursula has this alternative version of the wrapped braided ponytail that looks just as fabulous: the twisted ponytail.
Once you’ve created your high ponytail, separate your hair into two, rather than three, sections and twist them around one another from top to bottom, securing with a hair tie at the bottom. Fix your twisted ponytail in place with a hearty dose of hairspray, and you’re done!
