How to get volume in hair by blow drying

Don’t let gravity pull you down. Creating a salon-quality blowout at home isn’t easy, but it’s definitely possible. To elevate your styling skills, you just need to make a few changes to your hair care regimen and pick the right products and practice. Follow our step-by-step guide to master a big bouncy blowout at home.

Step 1: Volume starts in the shower

Make sure your hair is clean before styling, as excess oils, dirt and sweat will weigh it down and make it seem flat. Using the right products is also key to achieving your desired look. To add lift, body and grip to flat strands, try TRESemmé Full Fiber Volume Shampoo, infused with collagen technology. Formulated for fine hair, it washes out oils and helps you achieve a naturally fuller look. For optimum results, combine it with TRESemmé Full Fiber Volume Conditioner. Its lightweight formula is ideal to prep your scalp for a big and beautiful blowout. Apply to the mid-length and ends of your hair to hydrate and smooth for natural movement.

Step 2: Blot your hair gently

Wet hair is very fragile, so make sure you squeeze out excess water before you step out of the shower. To prevent frizz, split ends and breakage use a soft T-shirt or a microfiber towel and press your hair. Avoid rubbing or tugging and repeat a few times. You can then apply a volumizing product like TRESemmé TRES TWO Extra Hold Mousse. Use your hands or a comb to distribute it evenly through your hair from roots to ends.

Step 3: Heat-protectant is a must

If you’ve got time, air-dry your hair until it's 80-90% dry, to help prevent heat damage. If you’re using a blow-dryer, apply TRESemmé Thermal Creations Blow Dry Accelerator Heat Spray. This should always be your final step before using any heat styling tool, as it’ll help protect your locks and keep your hair healthy.

Blow-dry your hair backwards and away from your face.

Step 4: Elevate your styling techniques

Here are a few tips to get a smooth blowout:

Section your hair

Once your hair is mostly dry, section it, put half of it up and secure it with clips on the top of your head. Leave the bottom layer down and start blow-drying.

Blow-dry in an inward motion

Place the first section under the round brush. Direct your blow-dryer at the top of the section of hair and slowly move it further down to smooth out strands. To add more volume, pull the brush up and away from your head. Try not to completely wrap your hair around the brush.

Use the low heat setting

Apply tension while using the brush to add volume and smoothness, pulling the brush and blow-dryer at the same time. Remember to use a low heat setting to avoid frizz.

Use the ‘cool shot’ button on your blow-dryer

To set your hairstyle and make it last longer, use your dryer’s cold air setting for a few seconds before releasing your hair. Once your section is ready, twist your hair from the brush to pull it out and get your dream bouncy blowout look.

Focus on the roots

Looking for added volume? Focus on the crown of your head making sure the hair here is lifted, as this will add height to your look. To get lift at the roots, hold the brush horizontally and blow-dry your hair against the direction it lies.

Step 6: Make it last

For a long-lasting hairstyle, use the right finishing product that will enhance hold and volume. Mist TRESemmé Total Volume Hair Spray for all-day hold with no stiffness, stickiness or flyaways.
